2006-MAY-22: The movie's gross sales were $224 million during the first three days after its release. This is only slightly behind Star Wars 3 Revenge of the Sith -- the all time best grossing movie -- at $253 million. Jeff Blake, vice chairman of Sony Pictures, said: "Basically, the people have responded with great enthusiasm and appreciated a provocative story." The film was estimated as having earned $147 million overseas -- the biggest opening weekend ever, -- $77.0 million in the United States, and 8.1 million in Canada (equivalent to $7.2 million in U.S. funds). In the U.S. and Canada it was by far the highest grossing movie. Over the Hedge was second in both countries, earning $38.4 million in the U.S. and $2.9 million in Canada (equivalent to 2.6 million in U.S. funds). The movie seems to have done particularly well in predominately Roman Catholic countries: Italy, Spain, and Latin America, perhaps because of the church's strong opposition. Jeff Blake, vice chairman of Sony Pictures, said: "Basically, the people have responded with great enthusiasm and appreciated a provocative story."

2006-MAY-23: Sony's estimate of $147 million in overseas revenue from 82 countries was adjusted upwards to $154.7 million. This gave The Da Vinci Code movie the highest gross sales overseas of any movie in history. Three predominately Roman Catholic countries achieved the largest all-tiome openings: Italy, at $11.1 million; Spain, at $11 million; and Brazil at $4.8 million. Hollywood Reporter states:

"The biggest opening weekend tally came from the U.K., with $17.1 million. Trailing were Germany, with $13.3 million; France, $12 million; Japan, $11.3 million; Korea, $8.8 million; Australia, $6.5 million; Mexico, $6.4 million; and China, $4.8 million. The Chinese take was hailed as the highest ever for a Hollywood film in that market."
